EMBRACING SMART AND SUSTAINABLE CITIES
THROUGH INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES
The ACity Tech Expo is to motivate young people to become leaders in the field of robotics and technology by involving them in an exciting technology and robotics exhibition competition that builds engineering skills, inspires innovation, and fosters well-rounded life skills such as self-confidence, communication, and leadership.
The Academic City University Robotics Club hosts the annual ACity Tech Expo to highlight the technological and problem-solving prowess of students of high schools, and tertiary institutions. By recognizing and solving social issues, it gives students a chance to put their knowledge to use in the real world.
ACity Tech Expo aims to equip students with the requisite skills and knowledge to tackle pressing sustainability challenges through innovative technological solutions, cultivating a community of individuals passionate about creating a more sustainable world through technology, collaboration, and hands-on learning.
The aims of the ACity Tech Expo is to:
Ghana’s urban areas are experiencing rapid population growth and increasing challenges related to resource management, environmental sustainability, and quality of life. There is a pressing need to address issues such as inefficient resource management, traffic congestion, air quality monitoring and management, waste management, and inadequate infrastructure.
Failure to solve the issue of embracing smart and sustainable cities through innovative technologies in Ghana’s urban areas can result in challenges such as inefficient resource management, traffic congestion, inadequate waste management, and poor-quality infrastructure. This failure could lead to increased economic decline due to inefficient resource management, and public health risks.
Making a move to solve these problems, this year’s expo aims to provide a solution-oriented platform to address the challenges faced by Ghana’s cities and urban development. Our efforts are directed at achieving sustainable development goals 3, 6, 7, 9, and 11 which are: “Good health and well-being”, “Clean Water and Sanitation”, “Affordable and Clean Energy”, “Innovation and infrastructure” and “Sustainable Cities and Communities”
In the long run, participating students will develop a deeper understanding of the complexities of embracing smart and sustainable cities through innovative technologies , gain hands-on experience in designing and implementing innovative technological solutions, form valuable connections with peers and industry professionals, and contribute to a collective effort aimed at building more inclusive and sustainable cities for future generations.
The event is divided into three different major sections:
Embracing Smart and Sustainable Cities Through Innovative Technologies
The robotics competition will involve at least twelve (12) teams of at most four (4) members in each. Any high school or university student is eligible to participate.
Each team will be required to pay a registration fee to offset the cost of electronics and materials needed to build their robots to complete their task.
The robot body/chassis kit will be fully 3D printed. Abacus Robotics will sponsor the robot design and its files. Electronic equipment will be purchased and added to each team’s robot chassis to make up the full robot kit and enable the team to program the robot to be autonomous and complete the tasks given.
The challenge will be designed by Abacus Robotics while liaising with RoTech Academy. The challenge will involve various tasks around crafting sustainable smart cities through innovative technologies. Each team will complete the various tasks for points in the shortest possible time. The points accumulated and the time completed will be the determinants of the top three winners of the competition.
The event will take place the day before the tech exhibition challenge. The competition will last about four hours and we will have guests from STEM organizations witness and judge the Competition.
Embracing Smart and Sustainable Cities Through Innovative Technologies
The High School Tech Exhibition Challenge will involve at most fifteen (15) teams, one from each participating school comprising three (3) students and two (2) mentors (teachers) each.
The challenge is to present a solution to a problem related to the Theme “Embracing Smart and Sustainable Cities Through Innovative Technologies.” The students are encouraged to be innovative and creative about their ideas.
Registering participants will be required to send a summarized concept note of their project.
Exhibitions will be held in booth-like setups where each team will exhibit their various projects and be judged. This exhibition will be put on display throughout the Expo, however at a point on the schedule, selected guests from STEM organizations will be asked to judge the various projects and award prizes to the top three (3) winners.
Embracing Smart and Sustainable Cities Through Innovative Technologies
The University Tech Exhibition Challenge will involve teams of a maximum of four (4) members each. Any university is eligible to participate.
Each team will be required to provide a concept note explaining their project.
Exhibitions will be held in booth-like setups where each team will exhibit their various projects and be judged. This exhibition will be put on display throughout the Expo, however at a point on the schedule, selected guests from STEM organizations will be asked to judge the various projects and award prizes to the top three (3) winners.
